Mayweather vs. Marquez Looms

HBO aired the first of a several part documentary entitled “Mayweather vs. Marquez: 24/7.” The program will provide their subscribers with a behind the scenes look at the upcoming battle between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) vs. Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs).

“Mayweather vs. Marquez: Number One-Numero Uno” will commence on Saturday, September 19, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The bout will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View.

One thing is for sure, people will have an opportunity to see “Money-May” make it rain by flashing hundred dollar bills at every angle. People will see Mayweather brag about how he is still the best fighter in the world even though he hasn’t fought since December 2007.

People will see Mayweather appear to play the role of “villain” they way he did in the other “24/7” series with Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton – both of whom Mayweather defeated in 2007.

One thing that should be noted in the “Mayweather vs. Marquez: 24/7” series is Marquez’ rise through the rough streets of Mexico. Marquez’ humble beginnings and determination should be noted.

Well all know that Mayweather, “Money-May, Pretty Boy,” is a WBC titlist in five separate weight divisions. From De La Hoya, Hatton, Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, and Genaro Hernandez, Mayweather has defeated the very best out there.

Some may knock him because he never fought guys like Sugar Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, and Kostya Tszyu. However, Mayweather has fought and defeated everyone that has been put in front of him to date.

It is expected that Mayweather beat Marquez when they meet in two weeks. It is expected that Mayweather, a celebrity on “Dancing with the Stars” and WWE programming that included RAW and WrestleMania 24 last year, look like the Mayweather that has been dominant throughout his career.

Victory maybe expected of “Money-May,” but he hasn’t fought in nearly 1 ½ years. Mayweather has accepted the challenge of Marquez, a former three division world champion at featherweight, super featherweight, and lightweight.

The amazing thing about Marquez competing in the higher weight classes is the fact that everytime Marquez has moved up in weight, so has his strength and ability to stop guys.

In Marquez’ last two bouts, both at lightweight, he shockingly TKO’d Joel Casamayor (TKO 11) last year September and stopped former world lightweight champion Juan Diaz (TKO 9) earlier this year.

Perhaps Marquez is best noted for his two fights with Manny Pacquiao. In 2004, Marquez was floored three times in the very first round. There was no three- knockdown rule, so the bout wasn’t called off.

As the bout continued, Marquez’ superior boxing skills enabled him to take advantage of Pacquiao’s straight-forward style and underdeveloped right hand. All three judges scored the bout 115-110 (Pacquiao), 115-110 (Marquez) and 113-113 (even) for a split-draw.

In the rematch in March 2008, Marquez was floored in the early rounds off a Pacquiao left hand. The knockdown cost Marquez the victory as the judges ruled the bout 115-112 and 114-113 for Pacquiao and 115-112 for Marquez.

Marquez is in line to fight Mayweather, who does not expect this bout to last the full twelve rounds. Mayweather has a point, as Marquez, who has never been stopped, has a number of scar tissue around his eye brows.

Marquez has been in a lot of wars throughout his career. He’s 36 and began his career at age 20 in 1993. Mayweather has fought bigger and stronger opponents than Marquez, but has to be at his absolute best to defeat Marquez convincingly.

Can Marquez for Mayweather into a fight or will Floyd’s speed and boxing skills subdued Marquez’ aggression? Either way, Mayweather-Marquez is a must-see.
